A report from Caleb on the Hui he attended in Christchurch

From the 8th-10th of November I was part of a Sacred Pilgrimage, a Haerenga Tapu.  We were invited to experience the pilgrimage as ‘Wayfinders’, an indigenous metaphor rich with meaning for those who find themselves journeying into unchartered waters. The Hui was run by Forge Aotearoa whose aim is to help form leaders who are wanting to discover new ways of expressing church and mission in New Zealand: “These leaders will be: Jesus centred; will know how to experiment; will be insightful, wise, mature, and discerning; they will be growing in their discipleship, their emotional health and wellbeing, and their ability to discern what God is doing; they will have a deeper understanding of church and mission; and they will grow in their knowledge of themselves and their contexts in which God is inviting them to serve.”

At the Hui, stories were shared, innovative examples of living communities were offered, and as you can see from the photo we even experienced outdoor church which included the opportunity to connect to the space we were in and then to share what we had observed.  I noticed an unusual shed in the corner of the garden that reminded me of the wardrobe into Narnia, which got me thinking about the thin veil between heaven and earth!  This is a regular practice of Kiwi Church – and part of their commitment to rest, be, notice, and bless each time that they gather.

I really enjoyed getting to know my fellow Wayfinders, and was impressed with the attention that had been applied to being contextual in their approach to community.  There was a strong sense of mission with, rather than mission to. Food was a key part of all gatherings whether they were on a Sunday or during the week. There was also a willingness to be honest about the struggles that had been experienced along the way and the time it took to begin something new.  As one person said, beginning a new expression of church is like planting a fruit tree - it takes a year or two for the first fruit to appear, another five years for the next part of the tree to offer up its fruit and at least 20 years before the trees roots have gone deep enough into the soil for you to experience fruit in abundance!

A few gems from my notes:

“The gift of the wayfinder’s journey is not arrival at a destination, it is who we become along the way as we fulfil our potential.”

“Relax and enjoy the journey and who it is that journeys with you!”

“Eliminate hurry and commit to curiosity and availability.”

“Rather than getting caught up in the expectations of others or even yourself, ask: What is God’s expectation of me in this space?”

“Just be”

The next Hui is in Auckland in May so if you are intrigued, please let me know!
